About the plates

Road Traffic Act
Plate specifications were first laid down in law — the registration mark every vehicle has carried since.

1932
Hand-painted era
Specs updated again. Before this, plates were usually hand-painted in white onto a black background — the look we still press today.

1973
Reflective rule
Retro-reflective plates became mandatory — but traditional black plates with silver or white letters remain a classic choice for older machines.
